Web application security in the AI era: 7 things to do now

Attackers are using AI too – to probe for vulnerabilities and write more convincing phishing emails. Seven basic measures to make your website and software safer.

AI makes automated attack tools faster, and phishing emails are increasingly hard to spot. Yet most security incidents still come from basic mistakes. Here are seven things every business should do now for its websites and software.

7 things to do

  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) or passkeys for admin accounts.
  • Update regularly operating systems, frameworks and libraries; follow vulnerability alerts.
  • Use HTTPS everywhere and configure security headers.
  • Never keep passwords or secret keys in source code; use a secrets store or environment variables.
  • Least privilege: each account gets only the permissions it needs.
  • Back up regularly and test restores – a backup only counts if you can restore it.
  • Log and monitor unusual logins and sudden traffic spikes.

Don't forget people

Training staff to recognise phishing emails and messages, and to verify requests for money transfers or passwords, is as important a layer of protection as technology.
